Vashishta Gufa

Vashishta Gufa is a natural cave on the eastern bank of the Ganga, said to be where the sage Vashishtha — one of the most revered rishis in Hindu tradition — meditated for years. At the heart of the cave sits a natural Shiva lingam, and the space still functions as an active meditation site rather than a purely historical curiosity: visitors are welcome to sit quietly inside, and the ashram around it runs regular meditation sessions. The setting adds to the appeal as much as the cave itself — a peaceful stretch of riverbank well outside the busier parts of town, reached along a scenic road that hugs the Ganga. It's a popular stop for travellers looking for a quieter, more contemplative alternative to the crowds at the main ghats, and pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby (smaller) Arundhati Cave, dedicated to Vashishtha's wife. Visitors are asked to maintain silence inside the cave itself out of respect for others meditating.
