How to Reach Ujjain from Varanasi

Varanasi (Kashi Vishwanath) and Ujjain (Mahakaleshwar) are two of the most visited Jyotirlinga cities, and many pilgrims travel between them. The Mahakal Express connects the two cities directly.

The road distance from Varanasi to Ujjain is about 1,000 km, via Prayagraj, Rewa, Sagar and Bhopal. It is a very long drive of 17 to 20 hours; the train or a flight is far more practical.

The Mahakal Express runs from Varanasi Junction (BSB) to Indore via Ujjain. The journey takes about 16 to 17 hours, and it was introduced to link Kashi Vishwanath with Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar.

Other trains from Varanasi and Banaras towards Gujarat and Indore also pass through Ujjain on some days. Confirm the Ujjain Junction (UJN) stop when you book.

Last mile in Ujjain: Ujjain Junction (UJN) is about 2 km from Mahakaleshwar Temple. Autos and e-rickshaws wait outside the station and at the Nanakheda and Dewas Gate bus stands. Around the temple, the last stretch is often on foot because of traffic controls, especially on Mondays, Shravan and festival days.

Ujjain has no commercial airport. Check flights from Varanasi to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore (IDR); many go via Delhi or Mumbai. From Indore airport, Ujjain is about 53 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by taxi.
