Read air route →Delhi to Ujjain is a long journey, so most travellers take an overnight train or fly to Indore and drive the last hour. Direct trains connect Delhi with Ujjain every day, which makes Mahakaleshwar an easy long-weekend pilgrimage from the capital.
The road distance from Delhi to Ujjain is about 780 km, usually via Jaipur and Kota or via Agra and Gwalior. Plan for 13 to 15 hours of driving, ideally split over two days.
Driving suits travellers who want to stop at places on the way. For most pilgrims, an overnight train or a flight to Indore is faster and less tiring.
Several daily trains run from Delhi to Ujjain Junction (UJN). Journey times are about 10.5 to 15 hours, so an overnight train is the most convenient.

Last mile in Ujjain: Ujjain Junction (UJN) is about 2 km from Mahakaleshwar Temple. Autos and e-rickshaws wait outside the station and at the Nanakheda and Dewas Gate bus stands. Around the temple, the last stretch is often on foot because of traffic controls, especially on Mondays, Shravan and festival days.
Ujjain has no commercial airport. Fly from Delhi to Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport, Indore (IDR); direct flights take about 1.5 hours. From Indore airport, Ujjain is about 53 km, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by taxi.
Flying plus a taxi is the fastest way to reach Ujjain from Delhi.
