Baidyanath Dham has been associated with the religious history of Deoghar for centuries. Historical traditions recorded for the district refer to the area by older names including Haritakivan and Ketakivan. Parts of the temple frontage are traditionally attributed to Puran Mal of the Gidhaur royal line in the late sixteenth century.
The east-facing main temple rises prominently over the complex and carries distinctive sacred features on its upper structure. The site is especially significant because traditions associated with both Shiva and Shakti converge at Baidyanath Dham.
According to a well-known Hindu legend, Ravana performed intense devotion to Lord Shiva and received a Jyotirlinga under the condition that it should not be placed on the ground. Through divine intervention the lingam was set down at Deoghar, where it became established as Baidyanath Jyotirlinga. This story is part of religious tradition rather than a historical account.

During Shravani Mela (Sawan) the temple opens around 3–4 AM and stays open until about 10 PM. The district announces the exact times each year.
What is the price of the VIP / Shighra Darshanam pass?
The Shighra Darshanam (quick darshan) coupon is ₹300 on normal days and ₹600 on peak days such as 1 January and during Sawan–Bhado. Rates are set by the temple administration and can change; the last change was in September 2026.
Can I book Baba Baidyanath darshan or the VIP pass online?
No. There is no official online booking for darshan or the Shighra Darshanam coupon. Buy it at the counter at the temple administrative building on the day of darshan, and be careful with websites that sell "online VIP passes".
